Medisort Takes Sustainable Leap with Electric Retrofit Solutions Utilising ProteanDrive

Medisort has become the latest customer to electrify its fleet with Protean Electric’s parent company BEDEO’s innovative Reborn Electric retrofit solution, enabled by ProteanDrive

• The clinical waste management firm has started to electrify its X250 vans as Reborn Electric RE-100 Range Extender models

• By incorporating the RE-100 into its existing fleet, Medisort is actively working to reduce its carbon footprint across the firm’s entire operations as it acknowledges that sustainable waste management is part of a broader circular economy

• RE-100 allows diesel vans to be efficient in both electric-only, last-mile delivery mode in low-emission zones as well as densely populated areas, and use diesel mode for journeys outside of urban areas

• The integration of the RE-100 into Medisort’s fleet will be rolled out in phases to ensure a smooth transition, with the first van now in service and others to follow

Medisort, a leading player in the clinical waste collection and management sector, has embarked on a groundbreaking initiative to electrify its fleet by embracing revolutionary Reborn Electric RE-100 Range Extender technology from Protean Electric’s parent company, BEDEO. Electrified and enabled by ProteanDrive technology, this latest customer announcement underscores BEDEO Group’s continued leadership in the electric mobility sector, while marking a significant step forward in Medisort’s commitment to environmental responsibility.

BEDEO’s proprietary RE-100 Range Extender solution, powered by ProteanDrive, will allow Medisort to reduce its cost of ownership by extending the life of its X250 diesel vans while significantly limiting emissions. With its 117 km (73 miles) of electric range, the innovative solution seamlessly integrates with the existing diesel mode, allowing drivers to switch to the best power solution that suits their delivery journey and / or destination. Promoting flexibility and adaptability in diverse operational scenarios, the RE-100 retrofit solution allows fleets to travel in urban areas on electric-only mode and utilise the diesel engine for longer distances.

At the heart of the RE-100 retrofit solution are two ProteanDrive in-wheel motors and a 37 kWh battery. The compact and lightweight in-wheel motors are fitted to the rear axle, ensuring no suspension or rear cargo modifications are necessary, thus preserving ground clearance, load space and existing cargo systems.

Stuart Brittle, Managing Director of Medisort, said: “The ability to upgrade and electrify our existing fleet without changing our rear cargo fit-out is key for us to keep our operations running effectively and efficiently. We cater to companies that facilitate and house some of the most vulnerable within our communities, and the work we do is essential in keeping those businesses running. The ability to start our journey towards a greener, more sustainable future without jeopardising any of our key partners or clients is a huge step towards transforming our fleet and our operations to keep doing what we do, just in a more sustainable, flexible and cost-effective manner.”

Medisort’s decision to leverage this technology aligns with the growing global movement towards greener and more sustainable practicesCatering to various healthcare organisations such as dentists, care homes, and hospitals, Medisort aims to significantly reduce its carbon footprint by embracing the RE-100 solution, recognising the critical importance of reducing emissions in the healthcare waste management sector. Remaining committed to addressing its environmental impact, Reborn Electric retrofit solution offers Medisort the opportunity to electrify its existing fleet of large diesel vans and align with its dedication to sustainable waste management – a pivotal element in the broader circular economy.

Medisort’s proactive approach towards fleet electrification will be showcased through an initial project involving the retrofit of its vans with the RE-100, with the first retrofitted van already in service. With its second RE-100 van expected to join the fleet later this year (2024).
