Protean Electric Advances In-Wheel Electric Drive Development With Technical Presentations at EVS27

BARCELONA —Protean Electric, the global leader of advanced in-wheel electric drive participates at EVS27 Nov. 17-20 in Barcelona, Spain. Protean Electric is presenting two technical papers and a production in-wheel motor is on display in booth D409 as part of an SKF exhibit. SKF is a strategic partner with Protean Electric.

EVS27, hosted by the Electric Drive Transportation Association, is the largest electric vehicle exhibition in the world. Protean Electric is presenting at the symposium — one paper authored by Tim Martin and Richard Burke of Protean Electric and another co-authored by Gareth Roberts of Protean and Alessandro Galeazzi of SKF. Both papers present the global introduction of new key information related to the development of in-wheel motors for the automotive industry.

“Practical Field Weakening Current Vector Control Calculations for PMSM in Vehicle Applications” and “Influence of Wheel Bearing Performance on In-Wheel Motor Advance Applications” will be presented at 1-3 p.m. on Monday, November 18 in the Dialogue Session.

In January. 2013, Protean and SKF began a five-year strategic partnership, focusing on the unique wheel bearing system with integrated sealing and sensors developed by SKF specifically for Protean Electric. The bearing design has a significant influence on the performance of the in-wheel motor, which operates in an extremely harsh environment. The bearing is custom-designed, in anticipation of a new market segment for wheel motors.  Beyond this initial project the companies are looking for new areas of collaboration that will capitalize on their core expertise.

“Aligned with our BeyondZero strategy, SKF is committed to developing technology to support the electric and hybrid vehicle market to further reduce the carbon footprint. Combining our engineering knowledge with Protean’s expertise for in-wheel motors will be an excellent way to develop this market,” says Tryggve Sthen, president, SKF Automotive.

Protean’s in-wheel electric drive system is at the forefront of the next generation of technology to power motor vehicles. The electric motors reside in the unoccupied space in the wheel, producing torque and power exactly where drivers need it.  Protean Drive™ is a flexible system that can be used in pure electric vehicles, fuel cell vehicles or hybrid applications. The system also can be retrofitted to vehicles currently on the road since it does not require significant mechanical modifications to the current powertrain or underhood compartment.

“We believe our in-wheel electric drive system will enable the wide-spread transformation of the global auto industry, and we are very pleased to be a part of the exhibit with SKF,” says Protean Electric Chairman and CEO Kwok-yin Chan. “SKF is a leader in bearing technology and they are a valuable partner to meet the requirements for our unique in-wheel electric drive system. SKF also has the competence and skills to support the entire development lifecycle and series production.”

Features of Protean’s in-wheel motors include:

  • 75 kW (100 hp) peak power
  • Highest torque density of any of today’s leading electric drive systems
  • Mass of only 34 kg (75lbs.) per motor
  • Power and control electronics packaged inside the motor
  • Fuel economy improvements up to 30 percent in hybrid configurations, as compared to the existing vehicle, depending on battery size
  • Superior regenerative braking capabilities, which allow up to 85 percent of the available kinetic energy to be recovered during braking

Protean has been awarded 32 patents for its unique technology and design, with 88 additional international patent applications pending. Protean has won the prestigious 2012 Technology Pioneers Award from the World Economic Forum and received recognition from Car and Driver magazine as one of the ten most promising technologies for 2013.

In addition, Protean has developed multiple demonstration vehicles, including a Vauxhall Vivaro cargo van, Guangzhou Automobile Industry Group (GAC) Trumpchi sedan, a Ford F150 pick-up truck, and BRABUS full electric and hybrid vehicles, based on the Mercedes-Benz E-Class.
